Beach Towel Supplier for North America: US, Canada and Mexico
Most beach towel programmes sold into North America are treated as one market. They are three, and the difference shows up in labelling, in timing and in duty.
Kiran Global Exports is a cotton terry towel exporter from India, producing through a partner mill in Solapur, Maharashtra that has been weaving terry since 1972, certified to OEKO-TEX Standard 100, GRS, ISO 9001, MADE IN GREEN and BSCI. We supply beach towels to North American retailers, importers, e-commerce sellers, promotional distributors and hospitality suppliers.
THREE LABELLING REGIMES, NOT ONE
This is where importers get caught, and relabelling in a North American warehouse costs many times what correct labelling costs in the factory.
United States. Under the Textile Fiber Products Identification Act the label must show fibre content, country of origin, and the identity of the responsible company, usually an RN number. The FTC Care Labeling Rule separately requires care instructions. Country of origin marking is also a US Customs requirement, not only an FTC one.
Canada. Under the Textile Labelling Act and its regulations, labels must be bilingual, English and French. This is not a courtesy, it is a legal requirement, and a US label will not clear it. The responsible dealer is identified by a CA identification number or by a full name and postal address. Care symbols are expected. If your Canadian volume is small you may be tempted to ship US-labelled goods north. Do not.
Mexico. NOM-004-SCFI governs textile labelling, and the label must be in Spanish, showing fibre content, care instructions, size, country of origin and importer details. Product naming matters too, since the market term is toalla de playa.
If one programme serves all three countries, the most efficient route is usually a single trilingual label run in the factory rather than three separate SKUs. Tell us the destination countries at the order stage and we will build the label accordingly.
ON USMCA, HONESTLY
USMCA preference applies to goods that originate in the US, Canada or Mexico. Indian-origin beach towels do not qualify, and no supplier can make them qualify. Duty applies on entry into whichever country the goods land in.
The practical consequence, which distributors sometimes miss: importing into one USMCA country does not let the goods move duty free to the other two. If you are serving all three markets, work out with your broker whether to clear each country separately or to centralise, because the answer depends on your volumes and your warehousing, not on the towel.
We quote FOB and landed and we show the working. Your customs broker confirms the current rate for your classification. What we control is a clean commercial invoice, correct HS classification and complete origin documentation so your broker is not guessing.
THE NORTH AMERICAN BUYING CALENDAR
Beach towels are one of the most seasonally compressed categories in retail, and the order timing is not intuitive.
North American retail resets for spring and summer in February and March. Product must be in the distribution centre before that, which means on the water in the final quarter of the previous year, which means the order is placed and approved in the autumn.
An order placed in March is an order for next year. Every season a proportion of buyers discover this in April.
Two things follow. Approve artwork and samples early, because print approval is the step that slips. And if you are testing a new design, test it the season before you need volume, not in the season you need it.
SIZES AND WEIGHTS FOR THIS MARKET
North America specifies in inches, and the market has moved toward larger towels.
30 x 60 inches, the traditional standard, still the volume seller in value and promotional channels.
35 x 70 inches, oversized, where most of the retail growth has been. This is what a customer means when they say they want a big beach towel.
40 x 70 inches for the cabana and lounger segment.
350 to 450 GSM is the working range. Heavier reads as premium on a shelf but costs more to ship across the Pacific or through the Gulf, and dries slower on a beach. If your programme is e-commerce, weight also moves your shipping cost on every single order, so it is worth being deliberate rather than defaulting high.
PRINTING, AND ONE THING TO GET STRAIGHT
Sublimation printing only works on polyester. It does not bond to cotton. There is no such thing as a sublimated 100 percent cotton beach towel, and if one is quoted to you, either the towel is not cotton or the colour will not last.
On cotton, the real options are reactive printing, which bonds with the fibre and gives a soft hand and good wash fastness, and pigment printing, which sits on the surface, costs less, stiffens the printed area and fades. Reactive for a programme you want reordered. Pigment for a promotional run that will be used a dozen times.
Printed towels carry a minimum per design, not only per order, because each design needs its own screens or engraving. Six designs is six setups. If you are testing the market, run two designs deep rather than six shallow.
E-COMMERCE PACKING
If the towel ships direct to a consumer rather than to a shelf, packing is part of the product.
Individual polybag with a suffocation warning. Barcode or FNSKU applied in the factory rather than by your third party warehouse. Header card or belly band with your artwork. Inner cartons counted to your requirement rather than to whatever fits the carton.
Getting this right in India costs very little. Getting it wrong means a repack charge per unit in North America.
ON SUSTAINABILITY CLAIMS
The FTC Green Guides in the US, the Competition Act in Canada and PROFECO in Mexico all reach unsubstantiated environmental claims, and the exposure sits with the seller, not the supplier.
Our partner mill holds OEKO-TEX Standard 100, which certifies the finished textile has been tested for harmful substances. It is a chemical safety certification, not an organic or environmental one.
For recycled content the mill is GRS certified. For organic we work through a GOTS certified partner facility, licence GOTS-BVIN0317, issued by Bureau Veritas. That licence belongs to our partner mill, not to Kiran Global Exports, and we state that on every document. What makes your goods certified is a transaction certificate issued in your own company name for your specific shipment, not a scope certificate emailed as a PDF. Ask every supplier for one. Most cannot produce it.
